3 Gary Bridges Pass INDOT Inspections

By W. Gene Corley

Three bridges over the Borman Expressway in Gary, IN, built around the same time as the closed Martin Luther King Drive bridge (which was closed after "unusual cracking" was found in the bridge's precast concrete beams), won't face similar closures or restrictions. The decision comes after separate inspections by the Indiana Department of Transportation and a private engineering firm. Structural engineers agreed the bridges along Broadway, Grant and Georgia streets, built in 2003 and 2004 during the Borman widening project, were safe for vehicles.

Dr. W. Gene Corley, Senior Vice President of CTLGroup, was quoted extensively in a May 26, 2010 Post-Tribune article on the details of precast concrete, the material used in the Martin Luther King bridge project, as well as the typical service life of such bridges.
