Thomas Van DamPrincipal Engineer
Dr. Van Dam has over 25 years of engineering and materials science experience. He specializes in pavement design, evaluation, materials assessment and sustainability. Major areas of expertise include airport and highway pavement performance and sustainable civil engineering infrastructure.
Prior to joining CTLGroup, Dr. Van Dam directed the materials and sustainability group at a major pavement technology company. He also spent four years as a project manager for an engineering consulting firm where he directed the evaluation and design of air carrier airport pavement projects. Additionally, Dr. Van Dam has worked as a project engineer directing NDT and field surveys for pavement evaluation projects, and as a research engineer for the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory focusing on pavement related research including debonding and bonded overlay pavement performance.
Dr. Van Dam was an Associate Professor at Michigan Technical University for 13 years. There, he directed the University Transportation Center for Materials in Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure and the Transportation Materials Research Center. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses and conducted research in construction materials and pavement analysis, design and rehabilitation. Dr. Van Dam has also instructed courses for the U.S. Peace Corps, FHWA, U.S. Army and National Highway Institute (NHI), among others.
